Every project begins with understanding. We explore the opportunities and constraints of the land, while taking our clients on a journey to discover how they want to live and how their home should look and feel. From this understanding, the first freehand sketch emerges. We present this idea to our clients and, together, begin sketching again, allowing their thoughts, ideas and aspirations to influence what comes next. It is a liberating process that invites our clients to become active participants in the design of their home. As leaders in their own fields, their experience and perspective often introduce ideas that enrich the architecture in ways neither of us could have anticipated.

I have no hesitation recommending Rob Mills Architecture + Interiors. My wife, Rosie, and I were looking to renovate our house in Kew as our forever home. As we had young children with more on the way, we wanted a home that would be timeless, which would suit our growing family, and which would suit our personalities.

We met with several architects, and what impressed us most about Rob was his personal approach. He took the time to understand how we wanted to live; then he designed our home from there. We were part of every decision along the way, from the first sketches. The entire process was very collaborative and empowering.

Our house dates back to the 1890s. We retained around 30% of the original home and created new areas to suit the modern lifestyle of our family. Rob fully appreciated this approach, and also profoundly respected the heritage of the area. One area where I believe RMA stands apart is its holistic, end-to-end approach. With each new part of the process, such as the interior design and the selection of FF&E, Rob brought trusted specialists into the team. In addition, Rob continued to provide direction and insight at every stage, which we greatly appreciated. As we moved into construction, this was a natural extension of the design. RMA ran the tender for us, and they were instrumental in selecting the right team to build our new home. Even now – just a few weeks out from us moving in – Rob has been on-site to ensure our vision is realised.

For my family’s beach house at Airey’ Inlet, we engaged Rob Mills for several reasons, not least of which were his experience building along the Australian coastline and his proven ability to successfully gain council approvals. These are the hidden skills of an architectural practice which you often don’t see when looking at beautiful images. However, they are equally important to the delivery of an exceptional home.

I found Rob to offer real value for money with his fees, not only through his town planning expertise but through the way he tailored the design to suit both our needs and the surrounding landscape. That’s why this house has a true sense of ‘belonging’. The views which the site provides have been embraced as part of the design, and a rigorous materials selection process has taken place so that the house will endure for my children and their children – even here against the wilds of the ocean. I also hold in high regard RMA’s unique procurement method and fixed-price competitive gender process. It seems to me this is the fairest way to achieve the actual quality of a design, and to ensure the most competent and trustworthy builder is selected for construction. The ability to purchase furniture via Rob Mills’ procurement team was also a valuable service and made moving in far easier.

We also had a seamless experience between the architect and the builder, which is vital. There were zero demarcation disputes, and both parties worked together seamlessly. At every step, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Rob and his team. They are respectful, available and, importantly, always willing to listen. We are thrilled with the outcome.

Rob Mills was commissioned to build our family home in Toorak in the early days of his career. We had lived in the area during our “nomad” years living and working in numerous cities around the world. We decided that Melbourne would be the place where we would put down roots and build a home which embraced our love of the outdoors and the environment.

One of the great joys of Melbourne is that although it is a very big and international city, it has managed to preserve a lot of the green spaces and natural beauty not normally found in urban centres. We wanted a home which allowed the outside to come in but preserved the privacy of a home in the country and all this within a few kilometres of the CBD...a tall ask of an architect who was still finding his feet.

Rob is full of great ideas, but he’s also a great listener. The brief we gave him was specific and tight but we soon learned that good architecture doesn’t demand complete freedom and an endless budget. From the very first drafting of his ideas on a piece of butcher’s paper it was apparent that Rob has the gift of being able to create beauty of form from simple, and pure lines. It was minimalistic, which is what we wanted, but he and his team were able to make it practical without sacrificing the architectural purity.

We have lived in the home for 20 years and have loved every day. The home has preserved its architectural beauty and has not dated. Time has proven that good architecture does not need to sacrifice to liveability, and that is something that Rob understands well. There is nothing that we would change in the home and this is a further testament to Rob’s great architecture.

In early 2015 RMA - Rob - took on the project of working with me on the modernization and renovation of my home at 15 Harcourt street in Hawthorn East. The house originally designed and built by the famed architect John Beswicke in the 1880’s needed a full rethink and rework having had many people haphazardly change the house over its 120-year life. For that challenge you needed an equally famed and talented architect such as Rob Mills to design what would once again make this home stately.

From our initial meeting where Rob was gleaming from me as to what I wanted from the house I knew that we would work well together to achieve the outcome that I sort for this beautiful home. For me, coming from a business that works in home fashion entailing a lot of design work in both product and store design, Rob understood that I would have firm opinions on many things, and it was this that I wanted to be challenged to ensure that we achieved the best outcome both for the house but of course also for the owners/my family. Rob achieved this in all ways bringing together a team that worked to achieve a fabulous outcome.

The renovation needed to stay true to the heritage of the house, maintaining classical lines in all that was done while at the same time it needed to function in this century. “Modern concrete box” on the back of so many homes was not going to suit and in fact it was that which was being removed. The renovation took the house back to its original bones before adding a wonderful addition and alteration that gives clear sight lines from all windows making the most of light and vistas of the large garden. The house has a wonderful softness and warmth that is created by the curves so integral in the design.

The result I would say is the best 1880s house in the state in terms of beauty and function which is equipped with all that someone living in 2020 could want! The attention to the finest detail was maintained throughout by the team at RMA and walking through the house today years after its completion it is that detail that continues to give so much enjoyment and pleasure day after day. I look forward to my next project with Rob and RMA which will be a new build project on the Mornington peninsula.

Building a house is a very personal thing. Using the right architect is essential because you are involved in the process for a long time, and need to be comfortable and work well with the architect. Additionally, the difference between a good house and a great house is very much dependant on the skills, foresight, and interpretation of your likes and dislikes by your architect. Given that you spend a long time in your house it and it probably is the largest single investment that you make in your lifetime, the right architecture and right design and right feel will pay dividends for a lifetime.

We have used Rob Mills to design a home for our family three times. We have also had the misfortune to start to use other architects. So we feel that we are highly qualified to understand what constitutes GREAT ARCHITECTURE. Working with Rob has been a pleasure. He continually surprises us with changes that he feels will improve things, even after we have said we are OK with the design. His attention to detail is outstanding and his interpretation of our needs has been incredible. Over many years, we have established trusted relationships with councils, planning authorities and specialist consultants through thoughtful advocacy and a genuine respect for place. This experience helps navigate complex approvals while protecting the integrity of the original design vision.

Communication

Creating a residence tailored to the life of our clients is a privilege. Our design methodology and communication are structured to make that experience genuinely collaborative, while preserving our clients’ time and energy. An idea may begin with the immediacy of a freehand sketch before being developed through detailed three-dimensional drawings and hyper-real colour visualisations created by artists within our studio. These become part of the way we design, allowing our clients to understand their residence as it evolves, respond to ideas and make decisions with clarity and confidence.

For more than 30 years, we have also designed and built residences and workplaces for ourselves. Experiencing our own process from a client’s perspective has allowed us to continually refine the way we work, from communication and design development through to quality control and delivery. We believe that a first-class outcome depends on a first-class process. By bringing architecture, interiors, furniture and objects together within a clear and carefully managed methodology, we protect the quality of the original idea while making the journey more engaging, efficient and rewarding for everyone involved.
